Playground/Yard
Modifications
- Divide the playground into distinct activity zones to control traffic flow, direct activity and offer greater autonomy of choice. This helps remove the uncertainty of a large open space and prevents the domination of space (e.g. by ball games).
- Include a range of calming and stimulating sensory experiences.
- Provide access to sheltered, shaded and quiet spaces.
- Allow children to bring ‘indoor’ activities such as books, board games or art materials into the playground. Provide designated areas for these activities.
Supports
- Teach playground games one-to-one at a separate time so child/young person can process and learn the rules.
- Provide visual supports in the playground (e.g. equipment labels, playground rules, picture communication board).
- Ensure suitable outdoor clothing is available, such as wellie boots, waterproofs, sun caps, or winter hats/scarves/gloves.
