Corridors
Modifications
- If student is overwhelmed moving through busy corridors, allow him/her to leave class a few minutes before or after each class ends so they are moving through corridors when quieter and less crowded.
- Put floor markings on corridors to indicate the ‘direction of movement’ i.e. keeping to the left hand side of the corridor.
- Provide sensory paths in corridors, which can prompt student to engage in regulating impact when moving through corridors, and between classes.
- Provide sensory walls as a regulating distraction when waiting to go into a classroom.
Supports
- Carrying a heavy backpack/bag when moving through corridors as this provides calming deep pressure input. Ensure the bag isn’t too heavy! A bottle of water or an extra book may be enough.
- Access to ear defenders/ ear plugs.
- Educating all students to maintain a physical distance from others when walking through corridors, to avoid bumps and nudges.
