Calm spaces
The provision of calm spaces in the school environment is an important way to support sensory regulation for pupils who have a low threshold for sensory stimulation. Schools are busy sensory spaces. Environmental modifications are key, but it is not always possible to completely remove or reduce particular sensory input at school. This is why access to quieter, calmer spaces in the building are crucial for pupils with oversensitivity to sensory information.
Calm Rooms are dedicated rooms where pupils can go to escape the busy sensory environment of the school building. These are sometimes called Sensory Rooms. It is important to be clear on the purpose of this room. Some pupils need to escape the busy school building; others require additional sensory input to meet their high threshold.
Calm spaces are pockets of space around the building which provide a similar sanctuary.
