The Home Economics Classroom
Modifications
- If student is overwhelmed by smells in the room, seat him/her near open window, or other well ventilated area.
- Avoid the use of timers which have loud beeping noises or alarms. Encourage students to instead observe visual timers and clocks.
- Clearly label drawers and cupboards so items can be easily located.
- Turn off equipment when not needed to reduce background noise e.g. extractor fans, ovens.
- Ensure student is prepared for the noise of equipment before switching it on e.g. food processors, mixers, blenders.
- Provide catering gloves for those who are tactile sensitive.
- Allocate tasks which the student can tolerate e.g. using dry ingredients only.
- Provide standard chair, or allow student to stand, if he/she cannot tolerate sitting on high stool.
- Flexibility in the choice of recipes/meals to cook. Allow student to select food items which he/she can tolerate.
Supports
- Full access to regulating strategies during class time e.g. calming resources, fidget items.
- Regular breaks from the room as and when required. These will support regulation by providing time away from overwhelming smells, noises etc.
- Working with their group in a quieter area to reduce the distracting noise from other groups.
