Arriving at School

Modifications

  • Permit student to arrive at school a few minutes after the official start time.  The car park, front lobby and corridors will then be quieter and less crowded.
  • If a later start time is not possible, allow student to enter through a different door where there are fewer people.
  • Provide a quiet room near the door where they enter, and give time here to regulate before moving to the classroom.
  • A familiar adult could meet the child/young person at the front door, and accompany them through the corridors.

Supports

  • Provision of ear defenders or ear plugs to wear in car park, front lobby and corridors.
  • Participation in a ‘heavy work’ activity at the start of the school day e.g. putting put PE mats, setting out chairs in Assembly Hall, carrying books to a classroom. Proprioception supports nervous system regulation
